How Many Calories Are in Sunflower Seeds? Reading the 600 kcal Figure
The pack says 600 kcal per 100g, which sounds alarming — but that is 100g of kernels, not 100g of the bag. How to read the panel and work out a real portion.

You turn over a bag of sunflower seeds, see 600 kcal per 100g, and put it straight back down. That’s more than white rice. More than bread.
But that figure is being misread in two ways, and once you read it properly the picture changes considerably.
The key detail: that 100g is kernels, not 100g of the bag
The nutrition panel on Lao Jie Kou sunflower seeds says so in its own heading: “per 100g of kernels”.
The kernel is the part you actually eat — what’s inside once you’ve cracked the shell off. The 500g bag in your hand is seeds still in their shells, and you spit those shells out rather than swallowing them.
So the sum most people do in their head — “500g × 6 = 3,000 kcal in the bag” — is wrong at both ends: wrong because the 500g includes shells, and wrong because nobody eats a whole bag in one sitting.
The full nutrition panel
Per 100g of kernels:
| Nutrient | Amount | NRV% |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | 600 kcal (2510 kJ) | 30% |
| Protein | 25.4 g | 42% |
| Total fat | 46.3 g | 77% |
| Carbohydrate | 20.4 g | 7% |
| Sodium | 636 mg | 32% |
NRV% is the share of the recommended daily intake — and it too is calculated on 100g of kernels, a far larger quantity than you’d eat at once.

What a real portion looks like
Take 30g of kernels as an example — roughly a modest handful, and about what many people get through in one sitting:
| 100g kernels | 30g kernels | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | 600 kcal | 180 kcal |
| Protein | 25.4 g | 7.6 g |
| Fat | 46.3 g | 13.9 g |
| Carbohydrate | 20.4 g | 6.1 g |
| Sodium | 636 mg | 191 mg |
180 kcal for a handful — about the same as a drinking yoghurt or a large banana. That’s the number that actually applies to you, not 600.
One note: the 30g here is kernels, so the quantity of shell-on seeds you’d pick up is larger than that.
Fat at 77% NRV — let’s be straight about it
This is the highest figure in the panel, and it’s accurate: sunflower seeds are an oilseed, and fat makes up nearly half the weight of the kernel.
Two things belong alongside it:
First, 77% is per 100g of kernels. For a 30g portion the equivalent is around 23%.
Second, the fat in sunflower seeds is predominantly unsaturated — the type dietary guidance generally favours over saturated fat. That’s a characteristic of sunflower seeds as a food rather than a claim about this product; the panel on the pack doesn’t break fat down by type.
Protein at 25.4g — the overlooked strength
Per 100g of kernels, sunflower seeds carry 25.4g of protein — more than most snack foods, and more than ready-to-eat chicken feet (13.8–18g per 100g; the detail is in how many calories are in ready-to-eat chicken feet).
A 30g portion gives you roughly 7.6g. Not a lot in absolute terms, but respectable for something you’re idly snacking on.
Sodium: 636mg per 100g
Like every seasoned snack, these contain salt. 636mg of sodium per 100g of kernels is about 32% of the WHO daily guideline of under 2,000mg.
For a 30g portion that works out at roughly 191mg, or about 10% — comparable to one pack of Thai sauce chicken feet.

How to snack on them sensibly
- Tip some into a small bowl instead of holding the bag. This is the single most effective trick. Eating straight from a 500g bag makes it almost impossible to track how much you’ve had.
- Cracking the shells is an advantage. It slows you down, which gives your body time to register fullness — unlike pre-shelled nuts.
- Use the zip. The bag reseals, which keeps the seeds crisp and makes it easier to stop.
- Keep an eye on salt if you’re watching it. If you’ve already had salty food that day, balance out the rest.
